Reaching Out
I would try to have an open relationship with my students so that they know that if they are having any problems, school related or not, that they can come to me. I would also try to keep the extra stuff that parents would normally bring in to a minimum so that the parents that can't afford to but this extra stuff dont have to and I would never have that type of stuff requird. I would also hope that all schools have ESL programs by now but you just never know, so I would try and help the students as much as possible one-on-one and if I couldn't help them then find them a tudor with hopefully no charge to the student's family. I'm really not sure what else I would do at this point.

You may not be sure as to what you would do, but you have a clear understanding of what you need to do. You need to have a good relationship with the students and they need to know that you care about them, even love them. They may choose not to learn, but as long as you can love them there is always hope. ESL is pretty much standard now, but now all poor students are ESL. As a teacher, one of the most helpful things you will be able to do for them is to teach them the hidden rules that society has put in their way. Only then will they be able to bypass them. It amazes how we have become such a society of classes. If we go back far enough, most of us come from roots of poverty. It's sad, but true.
