Student Voice

I think that letting the students have more say in their education is a good idea as long as they as a group agree on the topics and that the school has the last say. There are some cases where the students may want something where the school wants something else but the decision should be made by the school who has the student's best interest at heart while the students just want what they want. I wish when I was in high school we as a student body had more say in how somethings were run in the school. If we were able to choose our classes with a certain teacher in mind I'm sure things might be better or if we were able to have off-campus lunch as a choice instead of the gross food we were served in the cafeteria I'm sure we would be more productive during the school day. But there are many more ways that students should have a say in their education as long as the student's best interest is at heart and things don't go too far.

You sound like you're walking a fine line. You comment about the school having the last say reminded me of a time I was sitting on a hiring committee for a college. I was a full time faculty member, and the committee made a good solid decision about the person to hire. Unfortunately, the Dean didn't agree with us. Rather than working with the committee and discussing the issue. The Dean just threw out the decision and hired who she wanted. What do you think that did to our voice? What do you think similar treatment would do to student voice?

It's a fine line, that I think we need to define for ourselves and for students. It would be wonderful if more cases like the following were fostered. Recently, the students at Adams City High School in Commerce City took the lead and successfully managed to pass a bond issue to support building a new high school. The first bond issue to pass in 40 years. It couldn't have been done without the students influence. I think elementary students can have the same level of influence but perhaps need more guidance.
